How to fit a new tip on your walking stick

Over time, walking stick tips (also called “feet” or "ferrule") can wear down but replacing them is quick and simple! Here’s how to fit a new one at home.

What You’ll Need:

  • A hairdryer or a bowl of hot (not boiling) water

  • A pair of large pliers (optional)

  • A clean cloth

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Warm the old tip
Use a hairdryer or soak the tip in hot water for a few minutes to soften it. This makes removal much easier.

2. Twist and pull
Grip the tip firmly with your hand or pliers. Twist it from side to side while pulling to break the seal.
💡 Tip: If it’s really stuck, slide a pin or hairpin between the rubber tip and the stick to release the air seal before twisting again.

3. Clean the stick
Once the old tip is off, wipe the end of the walking stick with a clean cloth to remove any dirt or residue.

4. Warm the new tip
Just like before, warm the new tip slightly with a hairdryer or by soaking it in hot water. This makes it more flexible and easier to fit.

5. Attach the new tip
Line it up with the end of your stick and push it on firmly. You may need to twist as you go to get it fully seated.

6. Secure it in place
Tap the base of the stick on the floor a few times to help the new foot sit snugly. Then, lean on the stick gently to check that it feels stable and grippy.

And that’s it!

A simple change like this can give your walking stick a whole new lease on life improving grip, safety, and comfort with every step.
